Michael Chiklis’s father Charlie Chiklis is a second generation Greek American, owner of a hair/beauty salon and his mother Katherine is a hospital administrative aide. Its’ said that Chiklis got his acting abilities from his mother. His predecessors belonged to Lesbos Island. Michael Chiklis grew up in Andover, Massachusetts. When he was just at 5, he started entertaining his family and neighbors etc with his skills to imitate the celebrities. During his childhood, Chiklis made appearance in innumerous regional theatre productions and when he was at 13, he became a member of Actors’ Equity Association.
Michael received the degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts from Boston University College of Fine Arts.
When he was at 20, he got his head shaved in order to look like male pattern baldness for his role as a 65 year old man on ‘You Can’t Take It With You’. Using greasepaint instead of powder resulted in a long-term hair loss for him. It killed the hair follicles on his head and also affected his career in several ways. It was what made him to wear a hairpiece on ‘Wired’.
In order to pursue his dream to become an actor, Michael Chiklis moved to New York City. Initially, things were not with him and he had to struggle for several years. His struggle came to an end after he got a role in ‘Wired’. However, the movie bombed but Chiklis received good reviews for his performance and acting. His next guest appearances were on ‘Miami Vice’, ‘L.A Law’, ‘Murphy Brown’ and ‘Seinfeld’ etc. His first successful role was on ‘The Commish’, playing Anthony Tony J. Scali, a police commissioner of a small city. He next appeared on NBC Must See TV sitcom ‘Daddio’. In the television movie ‘Three Stooges’, Michael Chiklis portrayed Curly Howard. He then decided to revamp his personality and joined an extensive workout regimen and shaved his head. He then auditioned for a role on ‘The Shield’ and got the part of Detective Vic Mackey. His acting on series is highly appreciated by viewers and he received innumerous awards for his brilliant performance.
His voice-over credits include Chihiro’s father, Akio and Roman King Webster in the direct-to-video feature ‘The Adventures of Tom Thumb & Thumbelina’. He also gave his voice to several Family Guy episodes and also has a voice role in ‘Heavy Gear: The Animated Series’. In 2005, Michael Chiklis appeared in ‘Fantastic Four’ and was also seen in its sequel ‘Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer’. In 2008, he played the part of United States Secretary of Defense on the film ‘Eagle Eye’.
Among his other acting appearances are ‘The Legend of Secret Pass’, Robot Chicken’, ‘Rise: Blood Hunter’, Stuart Little: The Animated Series’, ‘Spirited Away’, ‘Do Not Disturb’, ‘Last Request’, ‘St. Michael’s Crossing’, ‘Carlo’s Wake’, ‘Soldier’, ‘Taxman’, ‘Touched by an Angel’, ‘Body and Soul’, ‘Nixon’, ‘The 100 Lives of Black Jack Savage’, ‘The Rain Killer’, ‘Wiseguy’, and ‘Miami Vice’ etc.
In 2002, Michael won the Emmy Award as an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his appearance as Vic Mackey on ‘The Shield’. In the very same year, he won a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in television Series. During 2004-05, he received a nomination for Golden Globe but he didn’t win it.
On June 21, 1992, Michael Chiklis married Michelle Moran. The couple has two daughters, namely Autumn and Odessa, born on October 9, 1993 and 1999 respectively.
Role on ‘The Shield’
On ‘The Shield’, Michael Chiklis portrayed the character of detective Victor Samuel ‘Vic’ Mackey. He’s a sharp minded detective in the fictional Los Angeles Police Department and is also the former leader of Strike Team. He’s approximately 40 years old. Among his family members are Corinne Mackey, his ex-wife; Cassidy and Megan Mackey his daughters; Matthew and Lee Sofer Mackey his sons.
